Distinguished and Famous people from Canterbury Bankstown

🏖️ John Howard

John Howard grew up in Earlwood and attended its public primary school before studying at Canterbury Boys High School. His father ran a garage, an experience Howard associated with his later interest in small business. After qualifying in law, he practised as a solicitor and entered federal Parliament in 1974. He served as prime minister from 1996 to 2007. His parliamentary career developed through the electorate of Bennelong, following these childhood and school years in the Canterbury district.

🩺 George Burniston

George Burniston was born at Campsie in 1914 before medical studies at the University of Sydney and early hospital work at Hornsby. He helped extend rehabilitation services after the war and promoted training for medical specialists when Australian postgraduate courses were still lacking. At Prince Henry Hospital his concern was the fullest life a patient could achieve, rather than the immediate hospital episode alone. Planning and collaboration with allied health workers were strengths. Away from professional duties he swam regularly, appreciated art and literature, and enjoyed music even though singing was not one of his talents.

🩺 Victor Chang

Victor Chang attended Belmore Boys’ High School after moving to Sydney as a teenager in 1951. At St Vincent’s he worked with Harry Windsor and Mark Shanahan, helping develop a sustained transplant programme under his direction from 1984. He also arranged staff exchanges with Asian hospitals and developed lower-cost heart valves for use in the region. His reputation rested on technical skill, collaboration and an ability to build support for services. The school connection belongs to the early Sydney years behind a medical career that later reached far beyond the city.
