The region of Canterbury Bankstown is situated in the southwestern regions of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is composed of a number of suburbs bounded by the Georges and Cooks rivers with Bankstown, being the largest suburb in the area.

The history of the region dates back to the pre-European settlement period where the land was inhabited by the Darug people. The area was very significant to the Darug people because it had plenty of resources which they needed for their survival. They used the rivers as a source of fresh water, fish and shellfish whilst the surrounding bushland provided them ample supply for food, medicine, and materials for making spears and canoes.

During the early European settlement period, the first grant of land was given to George Johnstone in 1793. He was an ex-naval offcer who was exiled from Britain for his involvement in a naval mutiny. He was given 2000 acres of land which he named ‘Bank’s Town’ after his wife, Dorothea Bank.

During the early 19th century, the settlement in the region progressed and by the mid-1800s, the first courthouse was built in Bankstown and the town’s first hotel, The White Horse Inn opened. The hotel was a major meeting place for the local community and it was also where many official functions were held. The building still stands today and has been refurbished into a museum which gives an insight into the early days of the region.

In the mid-20th century, the region saw significant growth and development which led to the establishment of new suburbs, residential areas, and a range of commercial and industrial areas. The area’s multiculturalism began to develop and the local community was enriched by the diversity of migrants who came from different parts of the world.

Today, Canterbury Bankstown is a thriving community which is known for its cultural diversity, vibrant community, and commercial activity. The region has a rich history and the local government is working hard to preserve its heritage through various initiatives including the protection and refurbishment of important Heritage sites and landmarks.

Overall, the region of Canterbury Bankstown has evolved over time from its early pre-settlement period to the modern and thriving community it is today. Its history is rich and varied and it is an important part of the Australian story.
